ROTK5

Romance of the Three Kingdoms VThe classic Macintosh game, with its music, on Mac OS X 10.4, in English and in Traditional Chinese.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms V (三國志V, KOEI, 1996) is the fifth of KOEI's grand strategy games set in the China of the Three Kingdoms. You take a warlord of the age, from Cao Cao to Liu Bei to a ruler of your own making, and work towards one China: 47 cities to govern and take, hundreds of officers with their faces and lives, seasons that turn, battles fought in formation, envoys, plots and duels, and a soundtrack of twenty pieces. The Power-Up Kit expands it. The Macintosh edition was only ever Japanese.

Here it is as a PowerPC Macintosh plays it today: the CD audio replaced by MP3 playback, so the music is there under emulation and from a hard disk; native on Mac OS X 10.4 without the Classic environment; and in English, down to the map's city names, the 500 biographies and the names you type. Each package holds both editions, the base game and the Power-Up Kit, for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X 10.4 or, since revision 4.7, a 68K Mac. A Traditional Chinese edition has begun as well, with the text and the font of KOEI's Chinese edition for DOS.

What each revision of the four layers brought, newest first. Dates are UTC.

2026-10-15 English 4.7 Claude

  • New: a disk for 68K Macs. KOEI's own 68K program in each application now carries the English layer too, and the music plays from AIFF-C files with no CD. It was played on an emulated Quadra 650: a campaign and three playtests.
  • A volunteer's plea and the council's words stay clear of the question that opens beside them.
  • A date's month has two digits (235/01), so the save list keeps its columns. The base game's table of letters leaves its empty cells blank.
  • A duel's winner says the loser is defeated, not slain. An officer learns "the Scale formation", and a notice names an ability in full. Hyphens for dashes.
  • The main panel's eight captions stand on KOEI's own brushwork. The items goal's list keeps long names in their columns, and the last four items still in kanji are named.
  • 16 reported faults in all, each seen on screen before delivery on 68K, Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X.

2026-10-14 Chinese 0.3 Claude

  • The screen where a new officer or item is named picks Chinese characters by pinyin. Its 46 buttons each bring up the characters from the syllable on the button to the next button's (a, ba, bi … zhao, zhuang), by tone and then by strokes; a character with two readings stands under both (長: chang and zhang).
  • One button brings up every character by stroke count, for a character whose reading you do not know. The 5,401 common characters of Big5 are there, and 48 rarer ones that the game's own names use (荀彧's 彧, 孫綝's 綝).
  • The screen no longer asks for a reading in kana, and the Latin letters on its buttons are readable (u, n, m and w came out as blocks).

2026-10-14 Chinese 0.2 Claude

  • 173 rarer characters of the messages were drawn as a sign and a blank in speech bubbles and biographies, many of them in names (荀彧, 賈詡, 龐德, 譙周): the game turns each character into a code whose row it cuts to seven bits, and the Chinese layer now turns those rows back.
  • The map has the Chinese city names of KOEI's Chinese edition, taken from its 16-colour map for DOS, stroke for stroke, and set in the map's own lettering: 晉陽, 代縣, 壽春, 豫章, 會稽, 吳.
  • Found in a first campaign played in Chinese (six game months, Mac OS X); the rest of what it found is still to do: the small map's caption, a rank without 第, two lines that touch their buttons.

2026-10-13 Chinese 0.1 Claude

  • A Traditional Chinese edition, its first build: both programs and both message archives in Chinese, for Mac OS 9 and for Mac OS X 10.4.
  • The text comes from KOEI's Chinese edition for DOS, which is the same game underneath: its messages go into the Macintosh game's archives entry for entry, and its painted buttons and panels fit as they are.
  • The Chinese font of that edition is carried inside the two programs, so the game's text needs no language kit. Names in the game's own files draw in traditional characters.
  • The menus, the About box and the window's title are Chinese: on Mac OS 9 with the Traditional Chinese language kit, on Mac OS X by itself.
  • Not finished: the name-entry screen is still the Japanese one, the movies are the Japanese ones, and most of the game has yet to be looked at on the screen.

2026-10-13 English 4.6 Claude

  • The formation chooser is English: the six labels of its chart (a picture nobody had redrawn) and the line that says which ground a formation suits. A unit's card says the same: Arrow, Hill type.
  • A formation an officer does not know, and the label of a button that cannot be pressed, are set whole and stay readable.
  • The year's goal as its ruler says it no longer ends in Japanese (reported from a real G4). The notice that closes a battle has lost its last kanji. An army's size is written in one kind of digits.
  • The Power-Up Kit's five goals have one name each on every screen, and are called goals throughout.
  • The headings of the officer lists have one shape and the word of the button just pressed: Draft: who? Energy 30.
  • A speaker who names himself says so: I am Wen Zhongye! Will no one face me? Cao Rui's army, the attackers' tactics, Warships.
  • The ruler's card (Techs, Foe and Ally), long names on the sortie dialog, the adviser's bubble there, 30days, Formation, Elapsed, Your choice?: 23 reported faults in all.

2026-10-12 English 4.5 Claude

  • A button's label as wide as its button (Officer; Ambit, Moral, Affin in the officer editor) is set in the small face and stands inside it.
  • The title of a new item's card no longer runs into itself.
  • The face editor's pens and patterns are Pen1 to Pen5, Tile1, Tile2; a new item's Picture button.

2026-10-12 English 4.4 Claude

  • Names entered in the game (New Officers, New Items) can be in Latin letters: 8 letters to a name, 12 to an item; a blank cell is a space.
  • The screen opens on the table of letters; the screen that asked for a kana reading is gone; the 44 kana buttons are labelled in romaji.

2026-10-12 English 4.3 Claude

  • The season is a small moving picture (a sprout, the sun, falling leaves, a snowflake) in place of its kanji; the date box says yr and mo.
  • The kana reading beside an officer's name is gone.
  • The map's city names are set in a pixel face with serifs.

2026-10-12 English 4.2 Claude

  • The 47 city names on the strategic map repainted in English, the land under the old names painted in again.
  • Four biographies corrected (Yan Liang, Wen Chou, Cao Pi, Chen Qun); the biography window is titled Officers' Lives.

2026-10-12 Mac OS X host revision 3 Claude

  • An envoy's audience that opened empty and stood so for most of a minute opens at once: the host's own sleep in TickCount was the cause.
  • Battles left to the computer take about 30% less time. Game files and saves unchanged.
  • Public: the host's source, rotk5-osx-host-20261012-r3.zip.

2026-10-12 English 4.1 Claude

  • Found by playing a campaign to the unification of China: the scenario list with full titles in a list as wide as they need; list cells; two small faces before any name scrolls.
  • Speech bubbles wrapped to their window; whole strings behind colour escapes; formations, 55 generals' titles and the calendar; the number pad and battle bar pictures; six more button labels; three message corrections.

2026-10-11 English 4 and Mac OS X host revision 2 Claude

  • A native PowerPC layer inside the game's code replaces text as it is drawn: 546 officer and city names, the programs' own strings, 69 self-names, the 500 biographies, menus and alerts, redrawn buttons and panel.
  • A name too long for its place is set in a small face; one that still does not fit scrolls (the marquee). Boxes are measured from their English text.
  • Host revision 2: the base game no longer crashes in Info > Officers on Mac OS X (three flipped bits in one routine, repaired at load).

2026-10-11 Mac OS X host revision 1 Claude

  • A Mach-O Carbon host around the game's unchanged PEF code: the MP3 editions as native PowerPC applications on Mac OS X 10.4, without Classic.
  • Public: rotk5-osx-host-20261011.zip.

2026-10-11 English 1 to 3 Codex

  • Revision 1: 9,161 text units of the message archives compiled to English; the message buffer enlarged from 16 KB to 64 KB.
  • Revision 2: three labels of the programs (Sound Mode, two Window Size lines).
  • Revision 3: the readable Latin font, ROTK Readable.

2026-10-11 MP3 patch 1.0 Codex

  • The game's CD audio replaced by QuickTime MP3 playback on Mac OS 9: the 20 soundtrack tracks play from a Music folder, no CD needed.
  • Public: rotk5-mp3-patch-20261011.zip.
